[JUL-22-20 11:38 PM Anonymous] Message from Tom
Colleagues,
We did it! In spite of all the uncertainties we’ve faced over the last few months, we managed to rise to the occasion and close out the fiscal year with $517M in total commitments. We’ve secured $2.7B toward our $3B campaign goal. This just goes to show that when the going gets tough, Gators get going!
You are to be commended for your commitment and dedication to the University of Florida and for the important role you play in our success. Without your collective efforts, we could not have achieved these impressive numbers. We’re in the home stretch now, and there’s no doubt in my mind that we can and will reach the goal in record time.
Thank you, and Go Gators!
Tom

ADVANCEMENT SPOTLIGHT
Shirley Lynn
Spend a few minutes talking with Shirley Lynn, Alumni Relations Assistant, and you may feel like you have known her forever. But she wasn’t always an open book. Shirley has literally grown up with UF Advancement. She started her first job after completing her Associate in Arts degree from Santa Fe College as a secretary with the UF Foundation, and she has been a part of the UF Advancement family ever since. Although she was shy as a new employee, her interaction with alumni and donors over the years has allowed her to grow into the outgoing personality we know today. She has held many positions in our organization, and has served eight executive directors of the UF Alumni Association and four Vice Presidents. Each of UF’s development campaigns has benefited from Shirley’s contributions. She is generous in sharing her knowledge and experience with her colleagues to support their success.
When asked what has caused her to stick around for so long, she stated, “UF Advancement is just a great organization. Nothing has made that more clear that the last few months.” Part of her motivation is knowing how important the work of UFA is to the University, but she is especially engaged by the passion and energy of the volunteers she works with and the close connections she has with many of them. Supporting the Alumni Association means being involved in events – lots of events! Because of this, Shirley has been able to travel and share in the excitement of tailgates, bowl games, and national championships. Her favorite event is always Grand Guard, and she does an amazing job of making our most revered alumni feel welcome.
Shirley is a Gainesville native. She was born at Alachua General Hospital, and still lives in the house to which she was brought home. When she is not at work you might catch her floating down the Santa Fe River, or spending time with one of her sisters. As the youngest of four girls, Shirley is the proud aunt of nieces and nephews, great-nieces and -nephews, and great-great-nieces and-nephews, ranging in age from 44 to not-yet-born! Although she lost her beloved dog Jake, a 13 year old cocker spaniel, some time ago, she keeps him close to her heart. Recently, she has provided a home for Dixie, who has not yet reached “child” status, but they are working on it.
When you have a chance, spend some time with Shirley Lynn, and ask her about the story of her first Grand Guard (it’s a doozey). She’s a treasure, and you are sure to learn something you never knew about UF Advancement.

Superior Accomplishment Award Winner
Congratulations to our own Sonya Allen, Associate Director of Talent Acquisition, for her Division I Superior Accomplishment Award in the Diversity & Inclusion category! Sonya took the lead in convening our H.A.N.D. (Helping Advancement Nurture Diversity) group to address diversity and inclusion within UF Advancement with a focus on creating awareness and education on these important issues. In addition to her efforts within UFA, she has been invited to speak at the national CASE Strategic Talent Management conference on D&I initiatives. This has spread the word about UFA’s commitment to D&I and has also elevated the national reputation of the University of Florida. Her diligence in going above and beyond to organize, encourage, and inspire others to consider this very important aspect of our organization is exceptional, and she is extremely deserving of this award.
